Experience Kangaroo Island like never before on this authentic Aboriginal expedition. Known to the Ngarrindjeri as Nurrungaui, the place of Nurrunderi, or their revered creator, Kangaroo Island boasts a history as vast and varied as its landscapes. Every narrative, every site, and every moment are steeped in lived experiences, promising an authentic dive into the waters, lands, and cosmology of the region.

On this tour, hosted by Ngarrindjeri elder, Mark Koolmatrie, you'll learn about Australian bush foods and medicine on a walking tour of Penneshaw. A delicious 2-course lunch will follow your Penneshaw walking tour. After lunch, travel to Seal Bay to gain an understanding of the sealing industry through Ngarrindjeri eyes at Seal Bay Conservation Park, then it's on to Vivonne Bay to follow the Nurrunderi story, our creator who entered the Kalowinyeri or spirit world and can be seen from Vivonne Bay. From here, travel to the western most part of the Island, Flinders Chase National Park and discover the significance of Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch and how they give the Ngarrindjeri people life. As you travel through the park, keep and eye out for iconic Australian wildlife, such as echidnas, wallabies, reptiles and koalas.

Itinerary

An early morning pick up from your hotel for a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills. On arrival, board the SeaLink Kangaroo Island ferry for the 45-minute crossing to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. Here you will meet your host, Mark Koolmatrie, a Ngarrindjeri elder and tour guide.

Mark will accompany you on a 45-minute walk in Penneshaw investigating Australia bush foods and bush medicines and he will begin discussing the culturally enriched stories of sites of deep significance. The stories will be from the beginning of the Kalowinyeri (creation) unfolding the layers of history, tales, and traditions of the local tribes to the current custodians of Kangaroo Island.

Your next stop will be to enjoy a delicious 2-course lunch before visiting Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you will hear about the sealing industry through Ngarrindjeri eyes and how Pungari the seal is an ancient being and good friend of Kondoli the whale.
Then it's on to Vivonne Bay to follow the Nurrunderi story, our creator who entered the Kalowinyeri or spirit world and can be seen from Vivonne Bay.

From here, travel to the western most part of the Island, Flinders Chase National Park. As you travel through the park, keep an eye out for echidnas, wallabies, reptiles, and koalas. See the rugged coastline from walks around Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. You will hear how Nurrunderi left this world and entered the Kalowinyeri to give the indigenous people life. Remarkable Rocks provide great photographic opportunities, and the Admirals Arch boardwalk takes you down a rugged cliff face to reveal the spectacular rock archway, a natural nursery and haven for playful Long-nosed Fur Seals. You will return to Penneshaw with a boxed dinner, to meet your return ferry and transfer to Adelaide.
